The Science of Sound Baths: How Sound Supports Nervous System Regulation and Deep Restoration

Part of Soul School - teachings on energy, alignment and nervous system regulation

There’s a reason sound baths feel so deeply calming and it isn’t just ‘woo.'

Sound has a remarkable ability to help the body slow down, soften and reset. People often arrive carrying the weight of their week and leave feeling lighter, clearer and more like themselves. While the experience can feel almost mystical, what’s happening is deeply rooted in the way the nervous system responds to safety, rhythm and frequency.

Sound and frequency sit at the meeting point of ancient wisdom and modern nervous system science - where intuitive, restorative practices are increasingly supported by our understanding of brainwave states, physiology and the body’s natural capacity to return to balance.

At its core, sound healing is not about adding anything new to the system. It is about creating the conditions where the body can remember its natural state of regulation, coherence and alignment. Sound simply provides the pathway.

What happens in a Sound Bath

During a sound bath you lie comfortably while instruments such as crystal singing bowls or chimes are played around you. The sustained tones and vibrations create an immersive sound environment that gently encourages the nervous system to slow down and settle. There is nothing you need to do. Simply rest and allow the body to respond naturally.

Your body is listening, even when your mind switches off

When you lie down in a sound bath, you’re not just hearing the instruments - your whole body is receiving vibration.  Everything in your system operates through rhythm: breath, heartbeat, brainwaves and neural signals.

Sound works through frequency and vibration. When you’re immersed in sustained tones such as crystal singing bowls, gongs, or chimes, your system begins to respond through a process called entrainment.

Entrainment is the body’s natural tendency to synchronise with external rhythm. Just as your breath slows when you listen to calming music, your brainwaves begin to shift towards a slower, more restorative state during a sound bath. This happens effortlessly, there is nothing you need to do. Your system responds automatically

From “doing mode” to “healing mode”

Most of us spend much of our lives in beta brainwave states - alert, thinking, analysing, planning. While essential for daily function (and keeping us safe), this state also keeps the nervous system activated. Sound baths help guide the brain into slower alpha and theta brainwave states. These are the same states associated with meditation, creativity and deep rest.

In these states:
• Muscles soften
• Breathing deepens
• Stress hormone production begins to reduce
• The nervous system shifts from sympathetic activation (fight or flight) into parasympathetic regulation (rest and repair)

This is where the body’s natural healing and integration processes occur. Sound creates the conditions where your system can return to equilibrium and the body can restore itself.

Beyond the analytical mind

The brain has different ways of processing information. The left hemisphere is more closely associated with logical, analytical thinking, helping us plan, evaluate and make sense of the external world. The right hemisphere is more involved in sensing, integrating and perceiving the bigger picture, including creativity, emotional awareness and intuition. Both are essential, but in daily life the analytical mind (left brain) is often dominant.

Sound doesn’t quieten the left brain as such — it simply gives more ‘airtime’ to the intuitive and integrative aspects of the right brain. As the nervous system settles and brainwave activity slows, awareness becomes less focused on analysing and more open to sensing and integrating. This is often experienced as clarity, insight or a deeper connection to self. Nothing new is being added. The system is simply returning to balance.

The body responds to resonance

Sound is not only heard — it is felt. Every cell in your body responds to vibration. Because the human body is composed largely of water, sound waves travel efficiently through tissues, allowing vibration to be felt throughout the body as well as heard. This is why the tones from crystal bowls can feel immersive — as though the sound is moving through you, rather than simply around you. This creates a gentle internal resonance, helping release stored tension and bringing the system back into coherence.

Physiologically, this can be understood as nervous system regulation. Energetically, many people experience this as a sense of clearing, expansion or realignment. Different language, same process.

The nervous system is the gateway to alignment

Your nervous system is constantly scanning your environment, asking one essential question: Am I safe? When safety is perceived, the system shifts out of protection and into restoration. Sound baths work directly with this mechanism. The consistent, predictable frequencies signal safety to the brain and body, allowing the system to soften naturally. There is nothing to analyse, nothing to force. The sound carries you into regulation.

For many people, this is the first time their nervous system has experienced deep rest without effort in a long time. It is within this state that clarity, emotional integration and energetic alignment naturally emerge.

Where science and energy meet

From a scientific perspective, sound baths influence brainwave activity, nervous system regulation and physiological coherence. From an energetic perspective, they support alignment, flow and release. These perspectives are not in conflict.

Modern physics continues to demonstrate that at a fundamental level, everything in the body exists as energy in motion — patterns of frequency and information. Sound provides an organising frequency, like a tuning fork. The body recognises harmony and naturally moves toward it.

Why people leave feeling lighter

After a sound bath, people often say:
“I feel like I’ve slept for hours.”
“My mind feels quiet.”
“I feel lighter.”
“I feel more like myself.”

This is the nervous system returning to balance. When the system settles, energy flows more freely. When the mind settles, the body can repair. When internal noise reduces, clarity returns. Sound does not impose change. It simply removes interference. Beneath that interference, alignment is already there.

A return to your natural state

Sound baths are not about escape. They are about reconnection. They are a remembering of the calm, regulated and coherent state your nervous system is designed to live from. The sound creates the space and your system does the rest.

The Power of Affirmations: How Words Shape Your Energy

Part of Soul School - teachings on energy, alignment and nervous system regulation

What Are Affirmations

Affirmations are powerful tools for shifting energy, reprogramming the subconscious mind and creating positive change in our lives. They are short, intentional statements that help to reaffirm beliefs, strengthen confidence and align our thoughts with the reality we want to experience.

How Affirmations Work

Everything in the universe, including our thoughts and emotions, carries a vibrational frequency. The words we speak, both internally and externally, shape the way we perceive ourselves and the world around us. When we repeat affirmations with intention, we rewire our neural pathways, replacing limiting beliefs with empowering ones. Over time, this leads to real, tangible shifts in our mindset, emotions and even physical wellbeing.

The Benefits of Using Affirmations

Regularly practicing affirmations can . . . . .
Shift Negative Thought Patterns: Replacing self doubt with self trust.
Increase Self Awareness: Helping you tune into your inner dialogue.
Enhance Emotional Wellbeing: Cultivating a sense of peace and positivity.
Strengthen Manifestation & Intention: Aligning your energy with your desires.
Support Energy Healing & Chakra Balance: Bringing awareness and harmony to different aspects of your energy body.
Affirmations are most effective when practised consistently, whether spoken aloud, written in a journal or repeated silently during meditation. They serve as a bridge between thought and reality, helping you embody the energy you wish to cultivate.

How to Create Affirmations

Creating effective affirmations starts with clarity and intention.
Use Present Tense Language to affirm what you desire as if it’s already true (eg. ‘I am confident and strong’ rather than ‘I will be confident’).
Keep statements positive and specific, focusing on what you want to cultivate rather than what you’re trying to avoid.
Engage the emotions and sensations tied to your affirmation, words infused with feeling are more powerful.
Align affirmations with the area of life or chakra you are working on (covered in more detail further down). Eg use ‘I feel’ for emotional balance (Sacral Chakra) or ‘I speak’ for self expression (Throat Chakra).

How to use Affirmations Effectively

To get the most out of affirmations, it’s important to engage with them in a way that feels intentional and aligned with your energy. Here are some powerful ways to integrate affirmations into your daily practice.

1. Speak them aloud with conviction
Vocalising affirmations, especially whilst looking in the mirror, strengthens their impact. Your voice carries vibration and speaking your affirmation out loud helps to anchor it into your reality.
Try this: Stand in front of a mirror, place your hand on your heart or solar plexus and say your affirmation with confidence. Feel the energy behind the words as you speak them.

2. Write them down
Writing affirmations by hand enhances their effect by engaging both your conscious and subconscious mind. Keeping a journal of affirmations allows you to track your progress and reinforce positive beliefs over time.
Try this: Write your affirmation 3 times in the morning, 6 times at lunch and 9 times at night (3,6,9 method). You can also post them around your home or workspace as visual reminders.

3. Repeat them in meditation
Pairing affirmations with meditation deepens their effect, allowing you to absorb them at a subconscious level. When you are in a relaxed state, your brain shifts into slower frequencies (alpha or theta brain waves), making it easier for new beliefs to take root.
Try this: Close your eyes, take deep breaths and repeat your affirmation internally with each inhale and exhale. Imagine the words flowing through your energy body, infusing you with their truth.

4. Pair them with visualisation
Visualisation amplifies the power of affirmations by engaging your imagination and therefore emotions. The brain doesn’t distinguish between imagined and real ones, so when you visualise yourself embodying the affirmation, you begin to energetically align with it.
Try this: As you repeat your affirmation, picture yourself already living in that reality. Feel the emotions of success, love, or healing as if it’s already happening.

5. Use affirmations with energy work
Since affirmations influence your energetic frequency, they pair beautifully with energy healing practices like Reiki and crystal healing. You can use them also during chakra balancing exercises to activate and clear each energy centre.
Try this: Hold a crystal that corresponds to the chakra you’re working on (eg rose quartz for the heart chakra) and repeat an affirmation that resonates with it.

Chakra Affirmations: A Targeted Approach

While general affirmations are beneficial, aligning them with the body’s seven energy centres (chakras), allows for even deeper transformation. Each chakra governs a different aspect of our physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Using affirmations that match their specific frequency can help restore balance and flow and enhance overall wellbeing.

Root Chakra (Muladhara) ‘I Am’
The Root Chakra represents stability, security and grounding.
When balanced, we feel safe and supported in life.
Affirmation: I am grounded, safe, and deeply connected to the earth.

Sacral Chakra (Swadhisthana) ‘I Feel’
The Sacral Chakra governs emotions, creativity and pleasure.
When in harmony, we embrace joy, passion and healthy relationships.
Affirmation: I feel joy, creativity and passion flowing through me.

Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura) ‘I Do’ or ‘I Can’
The Solar Plexus Chakra is our centre of personal power, confidence and motivation.
A balanced solar plexus allows us to take inspired action.
Affirmation: I can achieve my goals with confidence and ease.

Heart Chakra (Anahata) ‘I Love’
The Heart Chakra is the bridge between the physical and spiritual, governing love, compassion and connection.
Affirmation: I love and accept myself and others unconditionally.

Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) ‘I Speak’
The Throat Chakra governs authentic expression, truth and communication.
A clear throat chakra allows us to express ourselves freely.
Affirmation: I speak my truth with clarity, confidence and authenticity.

Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) ‘I See’
The Third Eye Chakra enhances intuition, insight, and inner wisdom.
A balanced third eye brings clarity and trust in our inner guidance.
Affirmation: I see clearly and trust my intuition.

Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) ‘I Know’ or ‘I Understand’
The Crown Chakra connects us to universal wisdom, higher consciousness and spiritual enlightenment.
Affirmation: I know I am divinely guided and connected to the universe.

In Summary

Affirmations are a simple yet profound way to realign your energy, shift your mindset and create a sense of harmony within. By incorporating them into your daily practice, whether through meditation, journaling or energy work you actively reprogram limiting beliefs and invite balance into your life. Whether you focus on one chakra at a time or use a full body approach, affirmations can be a powerful tool for self healing and transformation. Start small, be consistent and trust that with each repetition, you are aligning more deeply with your highest self.
