What becomes possible when we create enough space to hear ourselves again?
We live in a world of almost constant input.
Notifications. News. Social media. Other peoples opinions. Expectations. To-do lists. Messages. Advice about who we should be, what we should want and how we should or could live.
And then there’s the noise we carry within us.
The looping thoughts. The old beliefs. The familiar stories. The automatic or learnt responses. The voice telling us what we should do rather than asking what actually feels right.
It’s a lot.
And somewhere amongst all of it is you.
Not a future, improved or more enlightened version of you.
Just you - your truest essence, beneath the noise.
What happens when the noise drops away?
Think about those moments when everything seems to become quiet. Perhaps you’re walking in nature. Lying at the end of a sound bath. Meditating. Driving without the radio on. Standing beside the sea. Or simply sitting somewhere without automatically reaching for your phone.
There can be a moment where something shifts.
The nervous system settles. The mind chatter no longer dominates. The body softens.
And suddenly there is space.
This is one of the reasons I am so interested in the relationship between our state and our consciousness.
When we’re constantly responding to stimulation, stress and the world around us, it’s easy to live on autopilot. We react quickly. We repeat familiar patterns. We make decisions from the same internal state that created yesterday’s decisions.
But when we interrupt that pattern - even briefly - we create the possibility of responding differently.
We begin to notice.
And awareness changes things.
You don’t always need another answer
We’re surrounded by information.
If we don’t know what to do, we can search for an answer within seconds. We can ask someone. Watch something. Read something. Scroll until we find an option that feels reassuring.
There is enormous value in learning from other people.
But there is also value in remembering how to hear ourselves.
Sometimes the question isn’t:
Where can I find the answer?
It’s:
How can I become quiet enough to hear what I already know?
This doesn’t mean every instinct is infallible or that we should stop seeking advice. It means developing a stranger relationship with out own internal awareness so that the outside world isn’t always louder than the inside one.
Alignment isn’t perfection
For me, alignment isn’t about being permanently calm, positive or ‘high vibe’.
We’re human. Life happens. We get tired, overwhelmed, irritated , scared or uncertain.
Alignment is not the absence of that.
It’s the ability to notice when we’ve moved away from ourselves - and know how to return.
Through breath.
Through movement.
Through nature.
Through meditation.
Through energy work.
Through sound.
Through stillness.
Sometimes through simply putting the phone down and creating five minutes in which nothing else is asking for our attention.
These practices aren’t about escaping our lives.
They’re ways of becoming more present within them.
What does the most aligned version of you look like?
I love this question because it isn’t asking you to become somebody else.
It’s asking you to imagine you, with less interference.
The version of you who isn’t making every decision through fear, expectation, conditioning or habit.
How do you move through your day?
What do you make space for?
What do you no longer tolerate?
How do you speak to yourself?
Where does your energy go?
What becomes important?
What falls away?
And what decisions might you make differently?
You don’t need to redesign your entire life today.
Perhaps the most useful question is:
What is one choice I can make today from the most aligned version of me?
Because alignment isn’t somewhere we eventually arrive.
It’s something we practice.
Moment by moment. Choice by choice.
And perhaps one of the first steps is simply creating enough quiet to hear ourselves again.
