The Hermetic Principals: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Energy Mastery

There are some ideas that we seem to understand intuitively, even before we have the words to explain them: that consciousness matters, that everything is connected and that our inner world influences the way we experience our outer one. Energy is constantly moving and changing. Perhaps we have more influence over our experience than we realise.

The Hermetic Principles offer one framework through which to explore these ideas. Rooted in the tradition of Hermetic philosophy and brought together as seven principles in The Kybalion (published in 1908), they offer a way of exploring consciousness, energy and the nature of reality.

We don’t have to accept these principles as absolute scientific fact to find value in them. Instead, we can simply use them as a framework for observation.

What happens when we begin to notice the relationship between our thoughts, our energy, our patterns and our experience? And what changes when we become more conscious participants in our own lives?

1. The Principle of Mentalism

“The All is Mind; the Universe is Mental.”

At its simplest, mentalism is about the role consciousness plays in our experience of reality. We don’t experience life completely objectively; we experience it through a lens shaped by our beliefs, expectations, memories, conditioning and current state.

Two people can experience exactly the same situation and walk away with completely different versions of it. The external event may be the same, but the lens is different.

Once we start noticing the lens, we begin to realise that the way we are seeing something isn’t necessarily the only way it can be seen. And that awareness alone can begin to create space for a different perspective.

This doesn’t mean that we can simply think positively and make every difficult circumstance disappear. Nor does it mean that everything that happens to us has been created by our thoughts. It means becoming curious about the part our consciousness plays in how we perceive, interpret and respond to what happens.

Reflection: What lens am I looking through right now - and is it the only one available to me?

2. The Principle of Correspondence

“As above, so below; as below, so above.”

Correspondence is about recognising how patterns can repeat across different levels of our experience. Perhaps the version that resonates most strongly in everyday life is: as within, so without.

Our inner world can influence the way we meet the outer world. When we are internally overwhelmed, life can feel overwhelming. When we feel grounded and resourced, the same circumstances can sometimes feel entirely different.

This isn’t about blaming ourselves for external circumstances. It’s about recognising that inner alignment changes the way we move through them.

We can spend so much time trying to change what’s happening around us, when sometimes the most powerful shift begins within. And when something changes within us, we often begin to meet the world differently too.

3. The Principle of Vibration

“Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates.”

The Principle of vibration proposes that everything is in movement. Nothing is entirely static. Our bodies, emotions, thoughts and environments are continually shifting and responding.

In energetic language, we might describe this as our state. You know the difference between walking into a room feeling contracted, anxious or depleted and entering that same room feeling grounded, open and connected. The room hasn’t necessarily changed. You have.

This is where energy mastery comes in. It isn’t about maintaining a permanently “high vibration”. I don’t think that’s realistic. It could easily become another form of pressure.

It’s about becoming aware of our state and learning how to work with it: noticing where we are, understanding what we need and recognising that our state isn’t fixed. We can develop practices that help us regulate, shift and return to ourselves.

4. The Principle of Polarity

“Everything is dual; everything has poles.”

Hermetic philosophy suggests that apparent opposites may actually exist on the same continuum. Think of temperature. Hot and cold aren’t two entirely separate things; they are different degrees of the same phenomenon.

Looking at our inner world in this way can take away some of the pressure to make enormous changes overnight. Rather than trying to leap from fear to complete confidence, perhaps we can take smaller steps, from fear towards curiosity, from contraction towards openness, from powerlessness towards possibility.

Transformation doesn’t always require an enormous leap. Sometimes it begins with the smallest shift in direction.

5. The Principle of Rhythm

“Everything flows; out and in.”

Life moves in cycles: expansion and contraction, activity and rest, certainty and uncertainty, connection and withdrawal. Nature shows us this constantly.

And yet we often expect ourselves to remain consistent - productive, positive, energised and clear - regardless of the season we are moving through.

There is something freeing in recognising rhythm rather than constantly fighting it. The practice isn’t necessarily to stop the pendulum; it is to become conscious enough not to be completely carried by it.

There are times to expand and times to integrate. Times to act and times to be still. Sometimes alignment isn’t about pushing ourselves into a different state. It’s about recognising where we are in the rhythm and working with it rather than against it.

6. The Principle of Cause and Effect

“Every cause has its effect; every effect has it’s cause..”

Our choices, habits, responses and patterns have consequences - sometimes immediately and sometimes further down the line.

Cause and effect invites us to move from unconscious reaction towards conscious participation. Where am I repeatedly responding in the same way? What am I reinforcing? What changes if I interrupt the pattern?

This isn’t about believing that everything that happens in our lives is somehow of our own making. There will always be circumstances outside our control. But we can become more conscious of what we are contributing, what we are reinforcing and where we have the power to make a different choice.

That is where choice begins.

7. The Principle of Gender

“Gender is in everything.”

This is perhaps the principle most easily misunderstood through a modern lens. Within The Kybalion, Gender isn’t simply referring to biological sex. It describes complementary generative qualities traditionally characterised as masculine and feminine.

We might understand these today as different but complementary modes of energy: action and allowing, giving and receiving, doing and being, focus and flow. We contain the capacity for both.

This becomes particularly interesting when we start noticing which mode we habitually live from. Are we constantly doing, pushing and directing? Or are we waiting, receiving and allowing without ever taking the action that is needed?

Alignment isn’t about choosing one over the other. It’s about developing the awareness to recognise what is needed now. Sometimes growth asks us to take action. Sometimes it asks us to stop pushing long enough to receive.

From Philosophy to Practice

This is ultimately what draws me to the Hermetic Principles. Not the idea that we need to accept seven rules about how the universe works, but that they invite us to observe differently.

To notice the lens through which we’re seeing, the patterns repeating within and around us, the state we’re inhabiting, the rhythms we’re moving through, the choices we’re reinforcing and the balance between doing and allowing.

This is where philosophy becomes something we can actually work with. Awareness gives us somewhere to begin.

We may not control everything happening around us, but we can learn to become more conscious of what is happening within us - and from there, choose how we meet what comes next.

This is also very much at the heart of The ALIGN Method™.

Awareness · Liberate · Integrate · Generate · Nurture

Awareness of what is present. Liberating ourselves from the patterns that no longer serve us. Integrating a new way of responding. Generating the energy, thoughts and choices that align with where we want to go. And nurturing that alignment until it becomes something we live, rather than something we simply understand.

Perhaps that is where energy mastery really begins.

Not in controlling everything around us, but in becoming more conscious of what is happening within us - and learning how to work with it.
